President Trump Files $15 Billion Defamation Lawsuit Against The New York Times

Summary

President Donald Trump has initiated a $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times, alleging the publication made false statements about him, his family, and his businesses.

President Donald Trump has filed a $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times, alleging the newspaper published false statements about him, his family, and his businesses. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court in Florida, names The New York Times Company and reporters Susanne Craig, Russ Buettner, Peter Baker, and Michael S. Schmidt as defendants. Additionally, Penguin Random House, the publisher of a book co-authored by Craig and Buettner, is included in the suit.

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, President Trump accused The New York Times of being a "virtual mouthpiece" for the Democratic Party. He stated, "The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW!"

The lawsuit references several articles and a book published by The New York Times in the lead-up to the 2024 election, alleging they are part of a "decades-long pattern" of intentional and malicious defamation against President Trump. The complaint asserts that the defendants published these statements "negligently, with knowledge of the falsity of the statements, and/or with reckless disregard of their truth or falsity."

This legal action follows previous lawsuits filed by President Trump against major media outlets. In July, he filed a $10 billion defamation lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal after it published an article reporting on his ties to financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The New York Times has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the lawsuit.
