Airbnb Revises Guest Cleaning Policies Effective Nov. 20
Airbnb will prohibit hosts from requiring guests to perform chores such as stripping beds, doing laundry, or taking out trash, and will require all house rules to be disclosed before booking.
Airbnb announced that, beginning Nov. 20, hosts will no longer be permitted to ask guests to carry out cleaning tasks that are typically handled by professional cleaners. The new policy bars requests for stripping beds, taking trash offsite, washing and storing dishes, or other duties that require significant effort.
All house rules and any guest requests must be displayed on the listing prior to reservation, and hosts cannot add new rules after a booking is confirmed. The company also clarified that hosts may not limit access to advertised amenities or impose fines, as its AirCover program already safeguards hosts against property damage.
"House rules help guests understand what hosts expect, but we've heard from our community that they can be confusing, onerous and hard to manage. So we've redesigned them to make them easier to discover and clearer to set, alongside a new policy that keeps requests reasonable, with no surprises," Airbnb said in a statement.
The guidelines apply globally, with limited exceptions for unique circumstances, such as requesting guests to reduce shower time during drought conditions.
