Giants name J.J. McCarthy starter for upcoming game
The New York Giants will start quarterback J.J. McCarthy on Sunday against the Houston Texans, replacing Jameis Winston.
The New York Giants have selected J.J. McCarthy to start at quarterback for Sunday’s game in Houston, according to ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler. McCarthy, acquired from the Minnesota Vikings earlier this season, will take over the role from Jameis Winston, who started the previous week.
In his first appearance with the Giants, McCarthy entered the fourth quarter against the New Orleans Saints, completing 11 of 21 passes for 243 yards, one touchdown and one interception, and helped reduce the deficit to 34-27. He also moved the ball inside the Saints’ 15-yard line before the final drive ended on a fourth-down incompletion.
McCarthy missed his rookie season with the Vikings due to a knee injury and made ten starts in his second year despite additional injuries. The Vikings signed Kyler Murray during the offseason, leaving McCarthy available for the Giants, who are aiming to maintain their lead in the NFC East following Jaxson Dart’s torn ACL.
