Former NFL wide receiver questions Jay-Z's selection for Super Bowl halftime show

Resumen

Former NFL player Houshmandzadeh expressed doubts about Jay-Z headlining the Super Bowl halftime performance, suggesting locally connected artists might better suit the event.

The NFL’s upcoming halftime show is drawing criticism after reports that Jay-Z, who has produced the show for the league since 2019, may also serve as the headline performer. Former NFL wide receiver Chad "Ochocinco" Houshmandzadeh said on the program PREGAME: A Speakeasy Show that audiences might prefer a performer with stronger ties to Los Angeles, the host city for Super Bowl LXI.

"Nobody want to see Jay-Z perform at the Super Bowl. They don't," Houshmandzadeh said. "Find somebody that's locally connected to this community or bring a collection of international performers."

The speculation follows reports from Puck that Jay-Z was chosen over other artists such as Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus, who were reportedly considered for the slot. Last year’s halftime featured Bad Bunny, while Kendrick Lamar headlined the 2025 show.

Jay-Z’s role with the NFL includes a $5 million-per-year production agreement that was extended in 2024 for an additional five years. Although he has not performed at the halftime show to date, the rapper is currently touring his "Jay-Z 30" concert series, which celebrates the 30th anniversary of his debut album. The tour has generated significant revenue, including more than $42 million from three shows at Yankee Stadium in July.

Houshmandzadeh suggested that artists with a larger fan base in Los Angeles, such as Drake or Taylor Swift, could attract higher viewership for the halftime performance. He also noted that the NFL has not yet released an official statement confirming the halftime lineup.

The debate highlights broader discussions about the selection process for high-profile entertainment events and the balance between artistic vision and regional relevance.
