Knicks raise championship banner and distribute rings as 76ers win season opener
The New York Knicks celebrated their first NBA title since 1973 by unveiling a championship banner and handing out new rings, but the Philadelphia 76ers defeated them 106-100 in the season debut.
The New York Knicks marked their first NBA championship since 1973 with a ceremony at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday. The event featured the raising of a championship banner and the distribution of newly designed rings to the players, including Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby and Karl-Anthony Towns, before a crowd of fans.
The Larry O'Brien Trophy was displayed at center court alongside the rings, which incorporate a miniature representation of Madison Square Garden. The removable top of each ring reveals a model of the arena’s stands and court.
"What's up, Knicks fans? Most importantly, I want to say thank you guys for not leaving Game 4. We really appreciate it. As much as we won this, we wouldn't have done this without you guys. This is unbelievable. It's really a dream come true. I know overall we're excited to get this season going. We're ready to turn the page as a team. But one thing I would like to say: The joy that this city had this summer, we would love to replicate that again. Thank you, guys. Let's raise this banner," Brunson said after receiving his ring.
Following the ceremony, the Philadelphia 76ers, led by LeBron James, played their first game of the season against the Knicks and secured a 106-100 victory, beginning their campaign with a 1-0 record.
