Ohio State to Continue Season Without Injured QB Julian Sayin
Quarterback Julian Sayin will miss the remainder of the season after a throwing-arm injury, and coach Ryan Day said the Buckeyes will decide the starter between Luke Fahey and Tavien St. Clair.
Ohio State announced Tuesday that junior quarterback Julian Sayin is out indefinitely after injuring his right arm during the fourth quarter of the Buckeyes' 19-15 win over No. 5 Indiana. Coach Ryan Day declined to set a recovery timeline and indicated the team will move forward without Sayin for the rest of the season, including the postseason.
"We're going to play the guy that gives us the best chance to win," Day said, adding that both true freshman Luke Fahey and sophomore Tavien St. Clair will receive reps during the upcoming bye week as the staff formulates a plan.
Sayin, a Heisman finalist last season, had completed 71.2% of his passes for 1,772 yards, 17 touchdowns and two interceptions before the injury. He threw two touchdowns in the Indiana game, including a 38-yard strike to Jeremiah Smith.
Fahey, the current backup, entered the game after Sayin's fumble and managed a short scramble before a penalty gave Ohio State a first down. He has completed 9 of 13 passes for 203 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions this season. The Buckeyes have a bye this weekend before traveling to face No. 19 USC on Oct. 31.
