Knicks raise first championship banner in 53 years as 76ers win opening night

摘要

The New York Knicks honored their 1973 title with a banner ceremony at Madison Square Garden, but the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Knicks 106-100 in the season-opening game.

New York celebrated the raising of a banner commemorating the Knicks' 1973 NBA championship, the first such honor in the franchise's history in more than five decades. The ceremony took place before the season-opening game at Madison Square Garden, with former players and local celebrities in attendance. Knicks captain Jalen Brunson thanked fans and expressed hopes of returning to championship contention.

On the same night, the Philadelphia 76ers, led by 41-year-old LeBron James in his debut with the team, defeated the Knicks 106-100. The win gave the Sixers a positive start to the regular season. 76ers head coach Nick Nurse said, "It’s encouraging. I think the intent of what everybody has been doing is right. I’m really happy to come here and get a win. They’re a hell of a team, and when I wake up tomorrow, I’ll probably forget about it."

James added, "Obviously this is a marathon, but on day one, day six, day seven, whatever, the experience that we have we want it to translate to wins and more of a culture – a championship culture."

The Knicks' fans expressed disappointment after the loss, urging the team to improve as the 82-game season begins.
