Sixers defeat Knicks 106-100 in season opener as LeBron James and Jaylen Brown debut

Philadelphia opened the 2026-27 NBA season with a 106-100 victory over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. The win came as LeBron James and Jaylen Brown made their first regular-season appearances for the Sixers, joining a core that includes Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid and rookie forward VJ Edgecombe.

The Sixers struggled offensively in the first half but tightened their defense and outscored the Knicks in the second half. A pivotal stretch in the fourth quarter saw James return from a brief rest, Embiid hit a three-pointer, and Maxey record a pick-and-roll dunk that extended the lead. The Knicks narrowed the gap late, but a defensive stop by James sealed the result.

James found his rhythm in the third quarter, delivering a key pass to Maxey and adding several baskets and rebounds. He also attempted several three-point shots, missing most, but his playmaking helped generate transition opportunities. Brown’s first basket came on an assist from James; he later contributed back-to-back assists and a highlight dunk that energized the crowd.

Maxey led the team with early scoring, including multiple three-point shots, while Embiid, despite a modest shooting line, generated quality looks and contributed on both ends of the floor. Edgecombe’s defensive effort against Knicks guard Jalen Brunson was noted as a strong point for the rookie.

Reserve players Anfernee Simons and Adem Bona saw action, with Simons hitting three triples in the third quarter. Coach Nick Nurse employed an eight-player rotation, adjusting matchups in the second half to improve defensive coverage.

The Sixers will host the Cleveland Cavaliers for their home opener on Thursday.
