Rays and Brewers set to clash in World Series opener

Résumé

The top-seeded Tampa Bay Rays (98 wins) face the 103-win Milwaukee Brewers in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday in Milwaukee.

The Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers, the two highest-seeded clubs in the 2026 MLB postseason, will open the World Series on Friday at 8 p.m. ET in Milwaukee. Both teams entered the Fall Classic without a championship in franchise history.

The Rays earned the American League’s best record by combining power hitters Junior Caminero, Yandy Díaz and Jonathan Aranda with strong defense. They swept the New York Yankees in the ALDS and rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win three straight games against the Cleveland Guardians in the ALCS.

Milwaukee posted an MLB-best 103 regular-season wins and has lost only one game in October. The Brewers swept the San Diego Padres in the NLDS and then swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS, becoming the first team to sweep a club that had previously swept them.

Key positional matchups include catcher William Contreras, who leads postseason hitters with a 1.157 OPS, against Tampa Bay’s Liam Hicks, who posted a .774 OPS after the trade deadline. At first base, Brewers’ NLCS MVP Jake Bauers faces Rays’ Jonathan Aranda. In the outfield, Milwaukee’s 22-year-old Jackson Chourio, who has delivered timely hits in the NLCS, will line up opposite Tampa Bay’s versatile left-fielder Chandler Simpson.

The starting rotation pits the Rays’ Drew Rasmussen, Nick Martinez and veteran Freddy Peralta against Milwaukee’s Jacob Misiorowski, Logan Henderson and Robert Gasser. While the Rays’ staff has logged more innings and allowed fewer runs, the Brewers’ bullpen has posted a 0.61 ERA over 29 2/3 postseason innings.

Managers Kevin Cash, who previously guided the Rays to a World Series in 2020, will face Pat Murphy, a two-time Manager of the Year who has out-maneuvered the Padres and Dodgers in this postseason.

Analysts note that the Rays will rely on their starting pitchers and the production of Díaz, Aranda and Caminero, while the Brewers must sustain their offensive tempo and see Misiorowski deliver deeper starts to avoid overtaxing their bullpen.
