Michigan offensive coordinator cites quarterback change as catalyst for second-half comeback

Michigan offensive coordinator Jason Beck said replacing starter Bryce Underwood with freshman Tommy Carr at halftime was necessary to spark the offense and reduce turnovers in the 21-18 win over Penn State.

Michigan offensive coordinator Jason Beck explained that the decision to bench starting quarterback Bryce Underwood for freshman Tommy Carr during the second half was made "best for the team" and helped spark a comeback in the Wolverines' 21-18 victory over Penn State. The team trailed 3-0 at halftime and had accumulated only 80 yards of offense, hampered by Underwood's two interceptions.

"It can definitely be a difficult conversation," Beck said. "But just going into it, I felt it was the right time. The move needed to be made. And it did provide a spark for that second half. For whatever reason, the offense was able to kind of get clicking and playing a little better."

Carr completed 5 of 7 passes for 47 yards and contributed two rushing scores, including the game-winning touchdown, while the ground game surged with a 43-yard run by Bryson Kuzdzal and a 41-yard run by Savion Hiter. Beck praised Carr's composure, noting he performed "just like practice" despite the pressure of a Big Ten contest.

"I was really impressed with just how composed he was when he got in there," Beck added. "Which is really impressive."

Beck also highlighted Underwood's improvement in ball handling but cited his five interceptions and two lost fumbles as the primary reason for the change. He emphasized the importance of turnover margin, stating the Wolverines had been on the losing side early in the season.

"The turnover margin is such an important part to winning football games, and we’ve been on the wrong side of that early in the season. So that spurned the need to make a change for that second half."

Defensive takeaways in the second half gave Michigan three short-field opportunities, resulting in three touchdowns and a 74-yard scoring drive that put the team ahead by double digits. Beck cautioned against relying on turnovers, stressing the need to protect the football to maximize winning chances.

"We ended up coming ahead on that turnover margin, but you don’t want to be counting on getting three takeaways to come up plus-1. We needed to protect the football as we’re doing everything that we’re doing, to give our team the best chance to win."

Coach Kyle Whittingham declined to confirm the starting quarterback for the upcoming game against Indiana, though indications suggest Carr may retain the role.
