Saturday Night Live UK satirizes Shane Gillis' controversial monologue

Résumé

Saturday Night Live UK mocked comedian Shane Gillis after his U.S. hosting monologue included a sexist joke, prompting criticism and online praise for the British edition’s edgier approach.

Saturday Night Live UK aired a segment that lampooned comedian Shane Gillis following his recent hosting stint on the U.S. version of the show, during which he delivered a monologue containing a sexist remark about women’s clothing. In the U.K. sketch, anchor Ania Magliano introduced the roast by referencing a story about free cycling shorts at Munich’s Oktoberfest, saying the shorts would protect women from upskirt videos but could expose them to other risks. After a brief pause for audience reaction, Magliano highlighted that Gillis had also used the expletive “fucking” during a live sketch, noting the word is typically prohibited on the U.S. program.

"Oh, Shane, you’re not allowed to say that, you stupid fucking cunt," Magliano said, referencing the language rules that differ between the two versions.

Clips of the UK segment circulated on social media, with some users commenting that the show had become funnier than the original within six episodes of its second season. One observer wrote that the British edition was “doing everything the US version is afraid of doing.” Comedian Gianmarco Soresi used the clip to suggest that each country should have its own version of Saturday Night Live, proposing a periodic “world cup” competition among the shows.
