The late actor's memoir reveals how a loss of hand coordination while eating sushi led to his ALS diagnosis, which was publicly disclosed in April 2025.

Actor Eric Dane described an early symptom of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in an excerpt from his posthumous memoir, "Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments," released in November. He recalled that while eating sushi with his children, his right hand began to tingle and lose grip on chopsticks, a sensation he initially dismissed as fatigue from texting. The difficulty recurred three weeks later, prompting a series of medical referrals before a formal ALS diagnosis was confirmed nine months later.

Dane previously detailed the diagnostic journey in a 2025 interview, noting that multiple specialists ultimately referred him to a neurologist who acknowledged the complexity of his case. He announced his diagnosis publicly in April 2025 and continued to advocate for ALS awareness until his death in February 2026.

He is survived by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their teenage daughters, Billie Beatrice and Georgia Geraldine. The family released a statement expressing gratitude for the support received during his illness.
