Eric Dane’s Posthumous Memoir Details Extensive Drug Use and ALS Diagnosis

Summary

The late actor’s memoir lists numerous substances he used in his twenties and recounts his ALS diagnosis and family incident before his death at 53.

Actor Eric Dane’s posthumous memoir, “My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments,” released on November 3, includes a detailed account of his drug use during his twenties. In an excerpt obtained by People, Dane wrote that he “auditioned for a few roles, got cast in some, but mainly I did drugs,” and listed a range of substances, including alcohol, marijuana, heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, various painkillers, benzodiazepines, and prescription stimulants such as Adderall and Ritalin.

The memoir also describes a family vacation to Antigua in 2025, when his 14-year-old daughter Georgia helped prevent him from drowning after he lost his ability to swim following an ALS diagnosis. Dane announced his ALS diagnosis in 2025 and died on February 19 at age 53. His death certificate cites respiratory failure, with ALS identified as the underlying cause. He is survived by his wife Rebecca Gayheart and their daughters, Billie, 16, and Georgia, 14.

“I don’t think there’s a drug I didn’t try,” Dane wrote in the memoir.

The book will be available to the public on November 3.
