Giants evaluate quarterback options after J.J. McCarthy sparks fourth-quarter rally

摘要

J.J. McCarthy led a 269-yard comeback in the fourth quarter of the Giants’ loss to the Saints, prompting head coach John Harbaugh to say the quarterback review process is starting now.

The New York Giants fell 34-27 to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday after rallying from a 24-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy entered the game with 11:25 remaining and produced 269 yards of total offense, including three scoring drives, after an early interception.

"I thought he came in there and did a heck of a job given the circumstances, you know, and kind of desperation time," Giants head coach John Harbaugh said in the post-game press conference. "He made some plays and got us back, gives us a chance to win the game and we're throwing the ball in the end zone at the end so that was good. You've got to compliment him on that."

Harbaugh declined to name a starter after the game, stating that the decision was not yet a topic of discussion. He later added that the process of evaluating the quarterback position "starts right now."

McCarthy, who was acquired in a fifth-round pick on Sept. 28, completed 11 of 21 passes for 243 yards, one touchdown and one interception, posting a 90.0 passer rating. His mobility was highlighted by a 46-yard completion to Malik Nabers and a 28-yard scramble that kept the Giants in contention late in the game.

"It's a big asset for him, absolutely. He's a very mobile quarterback. Absolutely, that's a plus for him," Harbaugh said.

Veteran starter Jameis Winston, who finished with 152 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, was not given a start in the upcoming week, and the Giants may consider McCarthy for the next game against the Houston Texans.

Fullback Patrick Ricard praised McCarthy’s effort, noting the rookie’s willingness to take shots downfield and make plays with his feet, while also acknowledging Winston’s contributions.

The Giants remain atop a struggling NFC East as they prepare for next week’s matchup, with the quarterback decision expected to be a key factor in the team's strategy.
