Five of the top seven AP-ranked college football teams lose on Saturday, a historic upset

Resumen

Five of the AP Top 25's seven highest-ranked teams were defeated on the same regular-season Saturday, a first in college football history, prompting a reshuffle of the poll and playoff outlook.

Five of the top seven teams in the AP Top 25 suffered defeats on Saturday, marking the first time such a concentration of losses has occurred during the regular season. The upset slate was led by the SEC, where No. 1 Georgia, No. 6 Alabama and No. 7 Texas all fell to underdogs. No. 2 Notre Dame also lost to No. 8 BYU, and No. 5 Indiana was beaten by No. 4 Ohio State.

The results opened the door for No. 3 Miami to claim the poll's top spot after a 43-35 double-overtime win over Florida State. Georgia's 27-24 loss to unranked Auburn ended a 53-game streak against unranked opponents, while Texas dropped a second straight regular-season game after a 27-24 defeat by Florida.

Auburn coach Alex Golesh praised his team's effort, saying, "We’re just continuing to plug. We’re going to build Auburn back to where everybody wants it, one game at a time. Just hang with us."

Tennessee delivered a defensive performance against Alabama, holding the Crimson Tide to 201 yards in a 26-10 victory in Knoxville. Coach Josh Heupel called it a "phenomenal performance."

In other SEC action, No. 22 LSU beat No. 16 Mississippi State 31-3, and No. 9 Ole Miss defeated No. 13 Missouri by the same score. Kentucky also secured a 21-13 road win over Oklahoma, giving first-year coach Will Stein a historic start.

Indiana's 22-game winning streak ended with a 19-15 loss to Ohio State after a last-minute turnover nullified a potential go-ahead touchdown. Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin left the game with a shoulder injury and is expected to miss several weeks, according to coach Ryan Day.

Heisman Trophy favorite Jeremiah Smith recorded a 38-yard fourth-down touchdown against Indiana, tying the Big Ten career record for receiving touchdowns.
