Ohio State Holds Off Indiana 19-15 as Quarterback Julian Sayin Leaves with Injury

Summary

Ohio State defeated Indiana 19-15 after a late defensive stand, while quarterback Julian Sayin exited in the second half with a right-arm injury that could sideline him for several weeks.

Ohio State preserved a 19-15 victory over Indiana on Saturday, snapping the Hoosiers' 22-game winning streak. The Buckeyes' defense stopped Indiana's final drive when wide receiver Nick Marsh failed to stay in bounds on a potential go-ahead touchdown with just over a minute remaining.

Quarterback Julian Sayin, who had completed 15 of 29 passes for 235 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, left the game in the second half after a sack appeared to injure his right arm. He was seen heading to the locker room with his arm in a sling and was replaced by freshman Luke Fahey, who did not complete any of his two pass attempts.

Sayin's second touchdown pass, a long throw to Jeremiah Smith in the end zone, proved decisive. Smith, a Heisman Trophy candidate, recorded his first touchdown against Indiana in three games, finishing with four receptions for 68 yards.

"Julian will probably be out several weeks," Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said after the game.

Indiana's offense struggled in the second half, turning the ball over on fumbles in consecutive possessions—the first fumbles lost in 1,437 offensive plays during the streak. Kicker Nico Radicic missed a short field goal and a 55-yard attempt, and the team failed to convert a two-point conversion after its second touchdown, leaving the score at 19-13.

Indiana quarterback Josh Hoover, who transferred from TCU, completed 20 of 40 passes for 296 yards, with a majority of the yardage going to receiver Charlie Becker, who caught nine passes for 165 yards. Hoover also left the game briefly with a right-shoulder injury before returning.

The Buckeyes will travel to No. 19 USC after their Week 8 bye and then face Oregon, Northwestern and Nebraska before concluding the regular season against Michigan. Indiana remains in contention for the postseason, with upcoming games against USC, Michigan and Minnesota on its schedule.
