Child and Adult Killed After Vehicle Drives Through Soccer Game at Wichita Sports Complex
Police say a driver in a black truck is in custody after a vehicle entered a youth soccer field in Wichita, killing one child and one adult and injuring several others.
Wichita police confirmed that a child and an adult died after a vehicle entered a youth soccer game at the Stryker Sports Complex near 29th and Greenwich. The incident, which occurred around 3:25 p.m., also left multiple people with injuries that were taken to local hospitals, though their conditions have not been disclosed.
Capt. Aaron Moses said the driver, described by witnesses as operating a black truck, is in custody and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. He said investigators are still determining the speed of the vehicle and how it entered the field.
Emergency responders from the Wichita Fire Department, Sedgwick County EMS and other law-enforcement agencies arrived quickly, providing CPR and medical aid on site. Police asked drivers to avoid the area while the investigation continues and promised further updates as more information becomes available.
"There is no further ongoing threat at this time. We will provide further updates when we have additional information," the police department said.
A witness reported that the truck traveled 100-200 yards across the field before stopping, and that dozens of responders were present to assist victims.
