Apple Instructs Store Staff to Discourage Walk-In iPhone Duo Purchases Without Pre-Orders

Summary

Apple Store employees have been advised to warn customers that walk-in purchases of the iPhone Duo on launch day are unlikely to be fulfilled without a pre-order.

Apple Store staff have been told to inform customers that the iPhone Duo is expected to be unavailable for walk-in purchases on its launch day, Friday, October 23, unless they have a pre-order. Employees said they have been instructed to discourage customers from arriving without a reservation, noting that they would likely be disappointed.

The company’s online store directs shoppers to check back on Saturday, October 24, for possible pickup availability, though the message does not guarantee that stock will be on hand. It is unclear whether the guidance applies to all Apple retail locations worldwide.

Production constraints have been reported since early September, with output limited to a few hundred units per day in late August and further issues emerging later in the month. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman noted that Apple once considered delaying sales into November before assembling enough inventory for the October 23 launch, albeit in very limited quantities.

When pre-orders opened, delivery estimates shifted beyond the launch day within minutes, and all U.S. online configurations soon displayed a January 25 shipping date, effectively selling out the device for the holiday season.

"Demand for the iPhone Duo has been nothing short of extraordinary, and we are working to get devices to customers as quickly as possible," Apple said in a statement to the Financial Times.

Apple has not confirmed whether any retail stores will have stock for walk-in buyers on launch day. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States, with the first pre-order deliveries slated for October 23.
