Southern Nazarene safety Tyler Ulrich dies five days after on-field injury
Southern Nazarene University confirmed that sophomore safety Tyler Ulrich died five days after sustaining a traumatic injury during a game against Ouachita Baptist.
Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma announced Thursday that 21-year-old sophomore safety Tyler Ulrich died five days after a "traumatic injury" incurred during a football game against Ouachita Baptist. The Division II private school did not disclose the specific cause of death or details of the injury.
University officials said Ulrich passed away in the hospital surrounded by family, teammates and friends. The school held a campuswide prayer chapel on Tuesday to honor him, and the upcoming game against Southwestern Oklahoma State has been cancelled.
Ulrich, a native of Azle, Texas, was in his third season with the team, recording 36 tackles and starting 16 of 20 career games, including six starts this year. The injury occurred during a 49-14 loss on Saturday, when the game was delayed for nearly an hour while he received medical attention before being transported to a hospital.
"It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of our SNU football player, Tyler Ulrich," the university's athletics department posted on its X account.
"May God's peace and comfort be with us all," university president Keith Newman said in a statement.
Coach Dustin Hada described Ulrich as a "Man of God" and "ultimate example of quiet strength, loyal, worker, joyous" in a separate post.
The university's statement emphasized support for Ulrich's family, friends and teammates.
