Teen shooter identified in Bend, Oregon school attack; bystander kills gunman
Police identified the 16-year-old attacker as Griffin J. John II and said he was stopped by a bystander who shot him dead after a massacre at Silver Rail Elementary that left three children and a teacher dead.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the 16-year-old suspect, identified as Griffin J. John II, entered Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, and opened fire with a Maverick 88 pump-action 12-gauge shotgun that had been purchased by his mother. The shooter, a former student of the school, fired up to 15 rounds, killing three children aged 5, 8 and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher, before being shot and killed by a bystander who engaged him.
Police reported that the bystander, identified by his family as Kaylub Giamanco, a local resident with two daughters attending the school, acted after the shooter attempted to breach locked doors. The family issued a statement saying Giamanco "is not seeking recognition, but instead wishes to express his gratitude to the first responders, school personnel, and community for the outpouring of love and support."
Investigators are reviewing the suspect’s computer, phone, social-media activity and search history to determine a motive, though none has been disclosed. Additional ammunition, including 44 rounds, was found at the scene. Two other victims—a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher—remain hospitalized in critical condition.
