Zelensky says Ukraine will stop respecting ceasefire on energy targets after Trump announces diesel deal with Russia

Résumé

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Kyiv will no longer observe a cease-fire on energy facilities, citing a new U.S. diesel agreement with Russia and restrictions on Starlink use.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the Financial Times that Kyiv is ending its compliance with a cease-fire on energy targets that President Donald Trump announced, after Russia continued striking Ukrainian power stations. Zelensky said the block on attacking refineries is "out" and that Ukraine is "done" with the arrangement.

The decision follows a Trump-announced deal to purchase 300,000 tons of diesel from Russia and a reported restriction on the Ukrainian military’s use of SpaceX’s Starlink service. Zelensky described the limitation as a policy choice rather than a technical issue, saying it could cause civilian deaths.

SpaceX founder Elon Musk responded on X, stating that Starlink is a commercial service and that any speed or usage limits are set by the U.S. military and the president. Musk denied that his company had turned off terminals or used the service as a bargaining chip.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski criticized Musk for “playing politics,” while Poland confirmed it funds Ukraine’s Starlink subscription, which is used to guide long-range drone strikes.

Ukrainian officials reported that the loss of Starlink capability hampered several combat missions and that they have not received the usual U.S. satellite warnings of incoming Russian missiles. A U.S. official told Axios that the Trump administration was not involved in the Starlink limitations.

Zelensky, speaking on a televised interview, said he felt betrayed by recent decisions and warned that the outage could lead to further civilian casualties.
