Milwaukee Brewers lead Dodgers 3-0 in NLCS despite lower payroll

The Milwaukee Brewers entered Thursday's game as favorites to advance to the World Series after taking a 3-0 lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. The Dodgers carry the sport's highest payroll, while the Brewers ranked 19th in payroll for the 2026 season.

Milwaukee's roster this year includes acquisitions such as catcher Gary Sanchez, pitcher Angel Zerpa, and a trade that brought David Hamilton, Shane Drohan and Kyle Harrison from Boston. The team also added reliever Antonio Senzatela during the season. In the first three NLCS games, the Brewers won 2-1, 7-4 and 6-2, respectively.

Analysts have highlighted the Brewers' emphasis on contact hitting, noting that the team struck out 35 times in the series compared with 25 for the Dodgers. However, Milwaukee recorded five home runs, while the Dodgers hit none. Their batting average on balls in play was .393, well above the league average of .300, whereas the Dodgers posted .221.

FanGraphs analyst Dan Szymborski estimated the Dodgers entered the series with a 58% chance of winning, reflecting the advantage of their larger payroll. The current outcome shows the series probability shifting to 42% in Milwaukee's favor.

The Brewers' success has also been attributed to strong player development, with prospects such as Brice Turang, Jackson Chourio and Garrett Mitchell contributing, and pitcher Michael Misiorowski emerging as a leading pitcher in the league.

"The gaps between teams are small, and postseason series often come down to a few key moments," said Szymborski.

The series underscores the inherent variability of short playoff formats, where even teams with superior resources can be outperformed in a limited number of games.
