Troy Aikman hints his ESPN contract may not be renewed after Super Bowl
Hall of Fame quarterback and Monday Night Football analyst Troy Aikman said he senses ESPN is moving in a different direction as his contract expires in March, but expects to finish the season without issue.
Hall of Fame quarterback and ESPN/ABC Monday Night Football analyst Troy Aikman indicated on Thursday that he expects to leave the network after his current contract ends in March, following the Super Bowl on Feb. 14. Aikman told Underscore Media host Jimmy Traina that there have been no contract talks and that "it just seems to be where they’re going — that they’re gonna go in a different direction because there’s been no talks, no contract negotiations." He added that it would be logical for any renewal to be arranged before the Super Bowl if the network intended to keep him.
When asked whether the remainder of the season would be affected, Aikman said the rest of the year will be fine, expressing excitement about the upcoming Super Bowl and stating there is "not a problem at all." He did not comment on reports of tension with broadcast partner Joe Buck or Buck's recent contract extension.
Aikman's remarks suggest he may become a free agent, opening the possibility for other networks such as CBS or Prime Video to pursue him as a lead NFL analyst.
