Study finds GLP-1 drugs may offer health benefits beyond weight loss

Résumé

Research suggests that GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide could improve heart, kidney and liver health, reduce joint pain, and have potential effects on respiratory, mental and skin conditions.

Recent clinical studies indicate that GLP-1 medications, including semaglutide (found in Ozempic and Wegovy) and tirzepatide, may provide health benefits that extend beyond weight reduction. A Lancet-published trial reported that semaglutide lowered the incidence of heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular death in patients with existing cardiovascular disease and excess weight, with effects not fully explained by weight loss alone.

In the STEP 9 trial, semaglutide was associated with a significant decrease in knee osteoarthritis pain and improved physical function among adults with obesity. The FLOW trial showed a 24% reduction in major kidney complications and cardiovascular death for type 2 diabetes patients with chronic kidney disease who received semaglutide.

A New England Journal of Medicine study found that semaglutide improved liver tissue outcomes in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, with 62.9% achieving disease resolution versus 34.3% on placebo. Real-world data presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress linked GLP-1 drugs to fewer asthma attacks and COPD exacerbations, though researchers note further investigation is needed.

Preprint research on medRxiv suggested lower rates of substance-related and mood disorders among semaglutide users, but the authors caution that the findings are observational and not peer-reviewed. A JAMA Dermatology trial reported that adding tirzepatide to standard psoriasis therapy improved skin clearance in overweight adults with moderate to severe disease.

Experts emphasize that the mechanisms behind these effects may involve weight loss, anti-inflammatory actions, or a combination of factors, and they advise patients to discuss potential risks and benefits with their healthcare providers.
