Ukraine Strikes Russian Data Centers Amid Reports of U.S. Communication Limits

Ukrainian drones have hit three Yandex data centers and a partially built Sberbank facility in Russia, causing significant service outages for online services, banking, and other civilian applications. The attacks, described by Ukrainian sources as targeting critical digital infrastructure that supports the Russian war effort, have forced Yandex to rely on backup servers and other domestic providers while repairs are expected to take months due to sanctions on equipment imports.

In parallel, Ukrainian military officials reported that the Pentagon-controlled Starshield communications system, a hardened version of the Starlink network, began throttling its signal to fast-moving units on October 14. The speed limit, reportedly set between 40 and 100 miles per hour, affected aerial drones and led to the cancellation or failure of several missions, according to Ukrainian statements.

Ukrainian leaders also claimed that U.S. intelligence did not provide timely warnings of incoming Russian missile attacks, prompting President Volodymyr Zelensky to express concern about the reliability of American support. The White House and SpaceX have not confirmed the allegations.

Russia has responded to Ukrainian cyber-infrastructure attacks with its own drone strikes on Ukrainian data centers, citing the need to disrupt intelligence communications. Russian officials have suggested measures such as underground facilities and routing traffic through allied nations, though the feasibility of these proposals remains uncertain.

Analysts note that the recent Ukrainian advances in the Donbas region and the reported high Russian casualty figures have shifted the battlefield dynamics, while continued shortages in Western air-defense equipment and the reported communication constraints pose operational challenges for Kyiv.
