Underwater Thriller 'Whalefall' Stages Survival Inside a Sperm Whale
The film follows a college student who becomes trapped in a sperm whale's stomach while confronting personal trauma, featuring Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin.
A new survival thriller set largely inside a sperm whale's stomach follows college student Jay Gardiner, who is drawn into the deep sea after a giant squid lures him into the predator's mouth. The film, directed by Brian Duffield and co-written with Daniel Kraus based on Kraus’s novel, stars Austin Abrams as Jay and Josh Brolin as his late father Mitt, a diver whose death prompts Jay’s underwater quest.
Jay returns to Monterey for the anniversary of his father's death and, after learning his father disappeared near an underwater canyon, dives to locate the wreckage. He is soon caught in a chase between a giant squid and a sperm whale, leading to his accidental ingestion. The narrative alternates between the claustrophobic interior of the whale and flashbacks that explore the strained relationship between Jay and Mitt, including themes of parental pressure and grief.
The production emphasizes tight, single-location tension, a technique Duffield previously employed in the sci-fi thriller "No One Will Save You." Visual effects depict the whale’s interior with bioluminescent marine life, while Joseph Trapanese’s score underscores the suspense. Critics note that the film’s emotional subplots sometimes outweigh the action, but acknowledge Abrams’s performance in portraying a character struggling for air and survival.
"Whalefall" derives its title from the ecological term for a dead whale that sinks to the ocean floor, providing sustenance for marine ecosystems, a metaphor that ties the protagonist’s journey to broader themes of nature and renewal.
