Netflix cuts 1,000 jobs, film executive Doug Belgrad among those laid off

Resumen

Netflix announced a 6% workforce reduction, including the departure of film division executive Doug Belgrad, who had joined the company in 2024.

Netflix is implementing its largest restructuring in four years, eliminating about 1,000 positions, or roughly 6 percent of its staff, according to internal memos. The cuts affect film division executive Doug Belgrad, who had served as a close aide to film chairman Dan Lin since joining the streaming service in 2024 after a tenure at Sony that included a stint as president of Columbia Pictures.

Belgrad oversaw managers responsible for original live-action titles and supervised more than 30 production executives. He was involved in projects such as the Ben Affleck-directed Animals, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, the sports drama Mosquito Bowl, and Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew.

"We know changes like this are tough, but let’s stay focused," the memo from co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters read. "This is one of the most dynamic times in the history of entertainment – and it’s a moment perfectly suited to a company like ours that’s built at the intersection of technology and entertainment. Now it’s on us to step up and meet the moment, together, like we always do."

The executives also emphasized that Netflix’s business remains strong and on track to meet its full-year forecast, and that the company will continue to invest in high-impact areas to improve service and drive growth.

Belgrad continues to chair 2.0 Entertainment, a company he founded after leaving Sony in 2016, which is producing and co-financing a slate of feature films.
