Rams release Harrison Mevis, sign Blake Grupe after missed field goals

Summary

Los Angeles released kicker Harrison Mevis following two missed attempts against Buffalo and added Blake Grupe from the Jets' practice squad.

Los Angeles Rams kicker Harrison Mevis was released and the team signed Blake Grupe, who was on the New York Jets' practice squad, head coach Sean McVay said to reporters on Tuesday.

Mevis missed two field goals in the Rams' 37-34 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday, a 50-yard try in the first quarter and a 48-yard attempt in overtime that was blocked by Bills linebacker Gregory Rousseau.

He had been 5-for-9 on field goals this season, including 3-for-6 from 40-49 yards, while converting all 14 extra-point attempts. Mevis made his NFL debut with the Rams on Nov. 9, 2025 after the team benched kicker Joshua Karty.

"In the kicking game, especially with our PAT, field goal, not even close to good enough," McVay told reporters. "It cost us the game tonight."

The Rams also waived long snapper Alex Ward on Nov. 10. Mevis had performed well the previous season, hitting 18 of 19 field goals (including playoffs) and all 23 extra points.

Blake Grupe, a 5-foot-7, 156-pound kicker who previously played for the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts, has made 86 of 105 field-goal attempts (81.9%) and 96 of 98 extra points in his career, with a 19-of-27 record from 50 yards or more and a long of 60 yards. He signed a one-year deal with the Colts in March before being waived on Aug. 30 and claimed by the Jets the next day.

The Rams, now 2-3, will try to improve their record when they host the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
