Ukrainian Drone Strike Ignites Fire at Major Russian Oil Refinery
A Ukrainian drone attack on Russia's Kirishi oil refinery sparked a fire, intensifying concerns over fuel shortages amid ongoing strikes on energy infrastructure.
A Ukrainian drone strike targeted the Kirishi oil refinery in Russia's Leningrad region, igniting a fire at one of the country's largest oil processing facilities. The refinery, operated by Surgutneftegas, processes approximately 355,000 barrels of crude oil daily, accounting for 6.4% of Russia's total refining capacity.
Leningrad regional governor Alexander Drozdenko reported that three drones were downed in the Kirishi area, with debris causing the fire. He confirmed that the blaze was extinguished without injuries.
This incident is part of a series of Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure, which Kyiv asserts are aimed at disrupting Moscow's war efforts. The ongoing conflict has led to gasoline shortages in Russia, exacerbated by seasonal demand and repeated strikes on refineries. In response, the Russian government has extended a gasoline export ban until September 30 to stabilize domestic supplies.
Additionally, a diesel locomotive derailed in the Leningrad region, resulting in the death of the driver. Authorities are investigating potential sabotage. In a separate incident, a bomb along railway lines in Russia's Oryol region killed three track inspectors. These events underscore the escalating security challenges within Russia amid the ongoing conflict.
