Oregon coach Lanning says quarterback competition remains open ahead of Nebraska game

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning told reporters on Monday that the team is reviewing all aspects of its offense after a loss to UCLA, but he declined to detail any specific changes before Saturday's matchup with Nebraska. The Ducks' quarterback situation remains uncertain; if senior Dante Moore, who is recovering from a concussion, cannot start, the position will be decided between transfer Dylan Raiola and backup Brock Thomas.

Lanning said the evaluation will consider the players' recent performances and how quickly the offense can execute. He noted that Raiola, who led a win at USC when filling in for Moore, struggled against UCLA, completing six of 19 passes for 43 yards with two interceptions and a fumble. Thomas, who replaced Raiola in the second half, threw for 149 yards and a touchdown.

"[Saturday's performance] all plays into effect, and the body of work this week all plays into effect," Lanning said. "The question was asked of me why not make the change sooner after the game; I think that's fair. On the same note, I think some of the positions we put [Raiola] in weren't successful opportunities as well."

Lanning added that ball security is a key factor in the decision and that the coaching staff may adjust play-calling responsibilities for the upcoming game, though he did not specify who might take on that role. He expressed confidence in offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer and the rest of the staff while leaving open the possibility of a collaborative approach to game planning.

Nebraska's familiarity with Raiola, who previously started for the Huskers, could also influence Oregon's choice, Lanning said. The Ducks will finalize their quarterback and offensive strategy during the week of practice before traveling to Lincoln for the must-win contest.
