Confusion documented in Tennessee after failed lethal injection of Christa Pike

Emergency call logs released by the Nashville Department of Emergency Communications reveal a series of missteps and uncertainty among prison officials and first responders during the botched execution of Christa Pike at Riverbend Prison on 30 September. Pike, 50, was administered two doses of pentobarbital, but the drug failed to cause death, prompting an ambulance call that was initially deemed false because the caller could not verify a security code.

At 21:07, central prison command denied having placed the call, and it was not until 21:11 that officials confirmed its authenticity and allowed emergency crews onto the prison grounds. A later call at 21:34 acknowledged the chaotic circumstances as Pike was taken to a hospital, with a medic asking a colleague to ensure prison staff knew her destination amid the confusion.

Pike’s legal team attributes the failure to the drug possibly spreading under the skin rather than entering the bloodstream in a lethal amount. After a hospital stay during which she regained the ability to walk and talk, Pike was discharged and returned to custody, though her health status remains unclear.

The case is unprecedented, as Pike is believed to be the only person to survive a lethal-injection execution attempt. State officials have not explained the cause of the malfunction, and it is uncertain when or if a second execution attempt will be scheduled. Republican lawmakers have suggested exploring alternative methods, while Pike’s attorneys are urging Governor Bill Lee to commute her sentence to life without parole.
