UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham Calls for Renewed Brexit Debate Ahead of EU Summit

Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the UK should deepen ties with the EU and consider a future referendum on membership, framing Brexit as a source of harm that needs reassessment.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced plans to deepen the United Kingdom’s relationship with the European Union at a summit in Brussels scheduled for late November, arguing that the current post-Brexit arrangement is insufficient for Britain. He said the short-term agenda will focus on youth mobility, food and drink, and energy cooperation, while also suggesting that a future Labour manifesto could include an in-out referendum on EU membership.

Burnham told the Labour Party Conference that “Brexit has done more harm than good” and that the status quo “is not good enough for Britain.” He reiterated the same message in the House of Commons, emphasizing the need for pragmatic engagement with Brussels to address illegal immigration and stimulate economic growth.

Lord Frost, a former Brexit minister, responded that the British public should be “the boss of whatever is decided” after having weighed the arguments. Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson noted that, when he was Foreign Secretary, officials had concluded there was no evidence of successful foreign interference in the 2016 referendum.

During an interview on The Rest Is Politics podcast, Burnham said he had received a “clear answer” that Russia had interfered in the Brexit referendum, though he did not disclose the source of that information. In Parliament, he described it as “inconceivable” that Russia had not attempted to interfere.

The upcoming UK-EU summit on 20 November will aim to secure short-term gains while Burnham positions his government’s approach as a “sensible, pragmatic” deepening of ties with the EU.
