Canadian cybersecurity executive arrested in Pennsylvania amid FBI ShinyHunters investigation
Edward Dubrovsky, a Canadian cybersecurity executive who negotiates ransomware cases, was arrested on federal charges in Pennsylvania; the FBI is probing the ShinyHunters hacking group.
A Canadian cybersecurity executive who specializes in negotiating ransomware incidents was taken into custody in the Philadelphia area on Thursday. Federal court documents identify the individual as Edward Dubrovsky, 54, and list charges that include conspiracy to threaten the confidentiality of information for extortion and interference with commerce.
The arrest occurs as the FBI continues its investigation of ShinyHunters, a hacking group that recently claimed to have accessed data on nearly every FBI employee and was linked to a breach of the FBIjobs.gov website. FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X that agents had arrested another suspected co-conspirator of the group, but did not name the individual.
"Our agents in the field have arrested another suspected co-conspirator of the ShinyHunters group – the group believed to be responsible for the recent FBIjobs.gov incident, which occurred on a platform managed by a third-party vendor," Patel wrote.
Court records from the Eastern District of Pennsylvania show that prosecutors sought detention, and a judge ordered Dubrovsky held pending a hearing in the Eastern District of Texas. The U.S. Marshals Service was later directed to transport him to Texas for further proceedings. The Federal Bureau of Prisons lists him as being held at the Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia, with no release date provided.
Dubrovsky’s LinkedIn profile indicates he works with CyberSteward, a firm that offers services related to negotiating with threat actors, cyber extortion and settlement facilitation.
