FAA issues safety warning for U.S. airlines operating near Saudi Arabia

Résumé

The Federal Aviation Administration cautioned carriers about flight risks around Saudi Arabia following recent attacks that closed Riyadh's main airport, with the advisory lasting until Dec. 10.

The Federal Aviation Administration advised U.S. airlines to exercise caution when operating in or near Saudi Arabia after recent attacks that have forced the closure of King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. The airport has remained shut since the incidents began last week, and the attacks escalated on Saturday when a projectile struck a passenger terminal, resulting in multiple casualties.

Airlines have suspended flights to the Riyadh airport, with some suspensions extending for the remainder of the week. Several governments, including the United States and Australia, have also warned citizens against traveling to the region.

"Pilots should exercise caution in or around Saudi Arabia due to safety-of-flight risks associated with ongoing military activities and navigation systems," the FAA said, adding that the threats could affect aircraft at all altitudes. The warning is scheduled to remain in effect until Dec. 10.

Most U.S. carriers do not operate routes to Saudi Arabia, limiting the immediate impact of the advisory on domestic airline schedules.
