Oklahoma Upsets No. 1 Texas 27-24 in Red River Showdown
Oklahoma defeated top-ranked Texas 27-24 after a late field goal, despite being outgained in total offense, in a game that featured multiple turnovers and a blocked punt.
Oklahoma rallied to beat No. 1 Texas 27-24 in the Red River rivalry on Saturday. The Sooners secured the win when kicker Tate Sandell converted a 47-yard field goal with 19 seconds remaining, following a blocked punt that gave Oklahoma a scoring opportunity.
Texas led the game in yardage, outgaining Oklahoma 382 to 238 on the ground and through the air. However, quarterback Arch Manning threw two interceptions in the fourth quarter, one of which was returned for a touchdown, contributing to the upset.
Both teams struggled with the running game, and Oklahoma’s defense forced the turnovers that proved decisive. Post-game, Oklahoma wide receiver John Mateer said, "> I thought about this game for 365 days. I think that was the longest fourth quarter I've ever been a part of. It was awesome and I’ll never forget it. But I knew 19 seconds left that this was the time."
The victory marked Oklahoma’s first win over a No. 1-ranked opponent since 2007 and its first ever over a top-ranked Texas team. Analysts noted that while Texas dominated statistically, special-teams play and turnovers ultimately determined the outcome.
