Google prepares next-generation TV streamer with microphones and new remote
Google announced development of a next-gen TV streaming device that will add far-field microphones, presence sensing and a redesigned remote, while analysts note the company’s broader smart-home priorities.
Google confirmed that a new generation of its TV streaming device is under development. The upcoming hardware is expected to retain the core streaming functions of earlier models but will add far-field microphones, presence-sensing capabilities and a redesigned remote control.
Industry observers point out that the announcement comes as Google’s first-party smart-home hardware lineup has seen limited updates in recent years. The Nest camera series, introduced in 2021, has received incremental upgrades, and devices such as the Nest Hub Max have not been refreshed since their launch. Critics suggest that a more focused effort on updating existing smart-home products could better leverage Google’s ecosystem.
The news arrives alongside competing moves in the smart-home market, including Apple’s partnership with LG on a new smart display and Amazon’s launch of Alexa tablets that include the Google Play Store. These developments highlight growing competition for integrated hardware solutions across major platforms.
