Homeland Security Secretary Mullin Discusses Hurricane Response, DHS Shooting Investigation, and Federal Advertising

Resumen

Secretary Markwayne Mullin briefed on federal assistance after Hurricane Isaias, the ongoing investigation of a DHS officer-involved shooting in New York, and the use of Customs and Border Protection funds for advertising.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told "Face the Nation" host Margaret Brennan that the department has been coordinating with governors and FEMA to pre-position resources following Hurricane Isaias, which caused four deaths and widespread power outages. He said the response includes Coast Guard operations and efforts to restore electricity, and emphasized the collaboration from the White House to state and local officials.

"The coordination from the Oval Office with President Trump's leadership to the governors to the county first responders, we're all working very closely together," Mullin said.

When asked about a recent DHS officer-involved shooting in New York City, Mullin explained that the incident involved an individual with an extensive criminal record who attempted to evade officers. He noted that the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations are conducting the investigation and that any released footage will follow the completion of that inquiry.

"When it's completed, we'll release all the information," he said.

Mullin also addressed concerns about a planned livestream of the execution of convicted murderer Nidal Hassan. He stated that viewing the execution is optional and that the department continuously assesses security risks associated with such events.

"We weigh the risk every single day in this country. The Department of Homeland Security, that's what we do: is we protect the homeland," he said.

Regarding a $20 million advertising campaign funded by Customs and Border Protection, Mullin said the ads highlight national security achievements and that the administration does not plan to reimburse the expense.

"Anytime we can do a public service announcement and brag about America, I'm all about it," he said.

The interview concluded with Mullin reaffirming the department's focus on border security, reductions in fentanyl-related deaths, and overall public safety.
