Trump announces diesel supply deal with Russia as Putin rejects Ukraine peace talks

Summary

President Donald Trump said the United States will receive a large diesel shipment from Russia following a phone call with Vladimir Putin, while the Kremlin indicated it will not re-enter peace negotiations over Ukraine.

President Donald Trump announced that Russia will supply the United States with more than 300,000 tons of diesel immediately, with additional deliveries planned, after a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The announcement was made as the administration seeks to address rising fuel prices ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

Kremlin spokesman Yury Ushakov described the call as “friendly,” noting that both leaders hung up at the same time and that Trump expressed willingness to continue discussions for hours. During the conversation, Putin reiterated that the Kremlin would not resume peace talks on Ukraine, citing recent Ukrainian drone strikes as a factor.

According to a report by the Financial Times, U.S. envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff met with Ukrainian officials in Miami and indicated that intelligence sharing could be reduced unless Kyiv halted attacks on Russian oil facilities. A member of the Ukrainian delegation said the request came directly from the president.

Separate from the diplomatic exchange, Russian attacks continued in Ukraine, killing at least 33 civilians in Kramatorsk and 20 more in Zaporizhzhia, including three children.
