G-3 geomagnetic storm warning raises chances of aurora in northern United States tonight

A G-3 level geomagnetic storm driven by an October 8 coronal mass ejection is expected to affect the northern U.S. this evening, potentially producing visible aurora activity.

The National Weather Service’s Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a G-3 geomagnetic storm warning for tonight, noting that the storm could intensify further. The disturbance is linked to a coronal mass ejection that erupted from the Sun on Oct. 8 and has since reached Earth.

Experts from the NWS and NOAA say such storms can cause satellite and GPS disruptions, as well as other technical issues, but they also increase the likelihood of auroral displays at high latitudes.

Meteorologists added that mild weather conditions are forecast for the evening, providing a suitable backdrop for stargazing and observation of the waning Draconid meteor shower alongside any potential aurora activity.
