Man Killed After Tiger Attack at Yorkshire Wildlife Park

Summary

A 39-year-old man died after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster; police say the tiger was unharmed and the park remains closed.

South Yorkshire Police said a call was received at 13:35 BST reporting that a man had entered the tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster. The tiger attacked the man, who died at the scene, according to the force. Police confirmed the animal was not injured and stayed in its enclosure, posing no further risk to visitors.

The park announced that it had activated its emergency response procedures immediately and was cooperating with authorities to determine the circumstances of the incident. The facility will remain closed the following day, and officials asked the public to respect the privacy of the victim's family.

A visitor, Karmelle Pelham, 39, described hearing sounds she thought were gunshots and seeing an air ambulance, and said staff managed the evacuation in an organized manner.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park is home to Amur tigers, an endangered subspecies with an estimated 500 individuals remaining in the wild.
