Christa Pike released from hospital and returned to prison after failed lethal injection

摘要

Christa Pike, whose execution attempt on September 30 failed, has been discharged from the hospital and placed back at the Deborah K. Johnson rehabilitation center, where she will continue to receive medical care.

Christa Pike, 50, was discharged from the hospital on Saturday and returned to the Deborah K. Johnson rehabilitation center, the prison where she has been held for the past three decades, her attorneys said in a statement. > "She is grateful to the first responders and her medical team for their care in these extraordinary circumstances," the lawyers added, noting that she will continue to receive medical treatment at the facility.

The release follows a botched execution on September 30 in which Pike was administered two doses of pentobarbital. She was hospitalized after the attempt and was declared brain dead on Monday, but her condition improved, and her lawyer reported on Thursday that she was "up and walking," though still experiencing some confusion and limited use of her arms.

Witnesses in the execution chamber described the procedure as abnormal, and officials maintain that Tennessee’s execution protocol was followed. No official explanation has been provided for the failure; medical experts have suggested possible issues such as improper injection into surrounding tissue, a ruptured vein, or a faulty drug. Pike’s attorneys had previously highlighted concerns about her veins.

Pike was convicted in 1995 of the torture and murder of classmate Colleen Slemmer. She received the death penalty, while her co-defendant, Tadaryl Shipp, was sentenced to life imprisonment because he was under 18 at the time. After the murder, Pike was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The incident has prompted the resignation of Tennessee’s top prison official, and Governor Bill Lee has suspended executions in the state for the remainder of the year, although they continue in other jurisdictions.
