Conservative commentator Katie Zacharia, a senior communications adviser at Trump Media, will become the White House press secretary, succeeding Karoline Leavitt.
Katie Zacharia, a 42-year-old political strategist who has worked for Trump Media & Technology Group and previously served briefly as a spokeswoman at the Department of Homeland Security, has been named the White House press secretary. She replaces Karoline Leavitt, who left the administration in August and is reported to have joined Fox News.
President Donald Trump announced the appointment on his social-media platform, noting her long-standing support for his administration. Zacharia thanked the president in a post on X, describing the role as “the honor of a lifetime” and expressing her intent to work with the press corps.
Zacharia’s background includes frequent appearances on conservative outlets such as Newsmax and Fox News, an internship with the Republican National Committee, and a stint in the Bush administration’s Office of Political Affairs. Since June, she has served as a senior communications adviser for Trump’s media company and the Truth Social platform, according to her LinkedIn profile. She left the DHS position after a short tenure, citing family travel constraints.
Political scientists interviewed by the BBC said the appointment reflects a trend of selecting officials based on personal loyalty and highlights the growing overlap between traditional news media and social-media communication in modern politics.
