President Trump Calls for Death Penalty in Charlie Kirk's Killing; Suspect in Custody

Summary

President Donald Trump announced the arrest of a suspect in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and advocated for the death penalty in the case.

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that a suspect has been apprehended in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. During an interview with Fox News, Trump stated, "I think, with a high degree of certainty, we have him. He's in custody."

The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson from Utah, was arrested after his family contacted authorities following his alleged confession. Robinson, who had no prior criminal history, had reportedly become increasingly political in recent years and had expressed criticism of Kirk's viewpoints.

Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck on Wednesday while addressing students at Utah Valley University. The attack occurred despite the presence of security personnel, including university police officers and Kirk's private team.

In the same interview, President Trump expressed his hope that the perpetrator would receive the death penalty, stating, "Kirk was the finest person and he didn't deserve this."

Kirk's widow, Erika, delivered a speech from her late husband's podcast office, addressing those responsible for his death: "You have no idea the fire that you have ignited within this wife. The cries of this widow will echo around the world like a battle cry."

The investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement officials expected to release more details as they become available.
