ICE agent shoots man during custody attempt in Manhattan's Marble Hill
A man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after an ICE officer fired his weapon during a targeted enforcement operation in Marble Hill, New York, on Thursday.
A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer discharged his firearm during a custody attempt in New York City’s Marble Hill neighborhood on Thursday, injuring a man who was later taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening wounds. The incident occurred around 4 p.m. near West 225th Street and Marble Hill Avenue, and video from the scene showed multiple law-enforcement personnel and a gray vehicle with a bullet hole in its windshield.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, the operation was aimed at arresting a Dominican Republic national alleged to be residing in the United States illegally. Preliminary information from law-enforcement sources indicated that the shot was fired while officers were trying to take a different individual into custody, and the wounded man was not the intended target.
"ICE officers immediately rendered aid. The individual is alive and at a local hospital. The FBI and HSI are on the scene. The incident remains under investigation. More information will be shared as it becomes available," DHS said.
Federal investigators, including the FBI’s evidence response team, are assisting DHS in the investigation. New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she had been briefed and called for a full and transparent accounting of the incident. City Council Speaker Julie Menin expressed concern and urged a prompt, clear explanation from federal authorities.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted that a five-year-old child was present in a vehicle with the victim when multiple rounds were fired, but the child was unharmed. The mayor also indicated he had contacted the president to request an end to ICE enforcement actions in the city.
The shooting adds to a CBS News analysis that identified at least 30 incidents involving DHS officers during the previous administration, some resulting in fatalities. Authorities continue to investigate the Marble Hill shooting.
