Two Latvian nationals detained after breaching UK airbase used by US forces

British counter-terrorism police arrested two Latvian men, aged 32 and 36, after a security patrol at RAF Molesworth uncovered an abandoned vehicle and a small breach in the perimeter fence. The men were taken into custody on suspicion of trespassing, criminal damage and, under the National Security Act 2023, entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the United Kingdom.

RAF Molesworth, located about 100 km north of London, hosts US intelligence analysis, command operations and a NATO intelligence centre, but does not support flying missions. Police said the two suspects, who reside in Britain, are being investigated and that officers are searching two addresses near Peterborough.

The incident follows a separate alleged plot targeting RAF Fairford, another base used by US forces, which the British government has linked to Iran. However, officials said there is no evidence the Molesworth breach is connected to that case.

"We’re very aware of the recent heightened interest and concern around military sites, but at this stage there is nothing to suggest this incident is connected to the events at RAF Fairford last week," said Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London.

"We are highly vigilant about potential threats to our military sites and work closely with the police to keep them secure," defense minister Wes Streeting posted on X.

A US Air Force spokesperson thanked local law enforcement for the swift response and said the United States remains in close coordination with its UK partners to ensure the safety of military and local communities. Bomb disposal officers examined the abandoned vehicle and found no hazardous material.
