Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard defends scheme amid criticism

Ամփոփում

Kelvin Sheppard said the Lions' defensive shortcomings are not due to the scheme, emphasized the need for on-field results, and defended recent blitz calls while acknowledging errors by the secondary.

Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard used his Week 5 press conference to stress that promises of improvement are meaningless without tangible results on the field. He said the team’s poor defensive performance against Carolina was "lip service" until it translates into game-time evidence.

Sheppard highlighted the defensive line as the unit’s strongest element, noting that interior players Tyleik Williams and Alim McNeill are effectively controlling gaps and that edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, along with Derrick Moore and DJ Wonnum, are providing disruptive pressure. However, he said the secondary’s mental errors and inconsistent play are undermining the line’s impact.

Despite recent struggles, Sheppard affirmed his commitment to the current defensive system, warning that frequent changes to the playbook would create dysfunction. He defended the blitz calls made against Carolina quarterback Bryce Young, describing them as "the right calls" and declined to discuss execution details, citing internal conversations.

Addressing broader team issues, Sheppard echoed head coach Dan Campbell’s comments about trust, urging players to correct mistakes quickly and avoid overcompensating for teammates. He also rejected suggestions that the offense must carry the defense, calling such remarks "ultra disrespectful" to his unit.
