Samsung outlines which older models will still receive software updates

Résumé

Samsung says its newest One UI 9 update will reach flagship devices released in 2024 and later, while older models will remain on earlier versions with security patches through 2027.

Samsung has begun rolling out One UI 9, built on Android 17, to eligible devices as of September 2026, with older flagship phones expected to receive the update in October. The Galaxy S23 lineup—including the base S23, S23+, S23 Ultra and S23 FE—will receive their final major upgrade with One UI 9, after which they will no longer get new feature updates. Flagship models released before the S23 series, such as the Galaxy S22 and S21 FE, will stay on One UI 8 but will continue to receive security updates until 2027, as Samsung’s seven-year update commitment applies only to flagships launched in 2024 or later.

According to Samsung, the oldest flagship that will still obtain software support after One UI 9 is the Galaxy S24 series, assuming One UI 10 is launched in July and August. Among the mid-range A series, the Galaxy A16, A26, A36 and A56 are slated to remain supported, while the A15, A15 G and A25 5G are expected to end support by December 2027.

Samsung clarifies that its seven-year promise refers to seven major OS upgrades plus seven years of security updates, rather than a strict calendar timeline. The company advises users to verify their device’s upgrade history to gauge eligibility and suggests monitoring One UI beta programs via the Samsung Members app for early access to upcoming releases, noting that data backup is recommended before installing beta software.
