Series co-creator Tim King clarified that John Stewart's power ring in the 'Lanterns' finale is a unique, unsanctioned lantern that differs from the official Green Lantern of Sector 2814.

John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) receives a power ring in the season finale of HBO's "Lanterns," but the ring differs from the traditional Green Lantern construct. Co-creator Tim King told reporters that Stewart's lantern, created from Sinestro's fear-infused device, is unsanctioned and incorporates elements of yellow and fear, meaning he does not recite the standard Green Lantern oath.

"He has an unsanctioned lantern that has a bit of yellow and a bit of fear in it," King said.

King added that Stewart will operate as Earth's lantern outside the Guardians' authority, while Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) continues as the official Lantern for Sector 2814. The new oath Stewart adopts rejects the Guardians' anti-fear stance and pays tribute to Hal Jordan, reflecting a unique approach within the series' lore.

The show has taken liberties with comic book canon, introducing original concepts such as Stewart's bespoke oath and lantern. King noted that creators of Green Lantern stories have historically introduced new ideas rather than copying predecessors, emphasizing creative evolution of the character.

Co-creator Damon Lindelof said the decision to give Stewart this role felt appropriate, acknowledging that some fans might react differently.
