Showrunner explains why John Stewart's Green Lantern suit was omitted from the series finale

Series creator Chris Mundy said the decision to leave John Stewart's Green Lantern costume out of the finale was driven by the episode's emotional focus rather than a lack of design work.

The final episode of the series resolved the murder of Hal Jordan and set up John Stewart as Earth’s next Green Lantern, but Stewart never appeared in the iconic costume. Showrunner Chris Mundy told CBR that while designs for the suit existed, the team chose to omit it to preserve the emotional tone of the farewell between Jordan and Stewart.

"If the season would have continued on another day, you probably would have seen it," Mundy said. "But emotionally in that moment, once Hal and John have their goodbye scene — the Halogram and John — the season had ended, emotionally."

Mundy added that showing the suit would have distracted from the intended focus on the characters' relationship. He noted that the series emphasized character development over frequent displays of the ring’s construct abilities, and the finale was never meant to be action-heavy.

"There was never a version of the finale that was more action-oriented. This story was about these two guys. We knew that if we landed it emotionally with them, we would have done our job," he explained.

The decision also applied to other members of the Green Lantern Corps, who were not featured for the same reason. Fans can expect to see Stewart in costume in the upcoming 2027 film "Man of Tomorrow," where he will appear alongside Superman and Lex Luthor against the threat of Brainiac.
