Eva Marie Saint, Oscar-winning actress of 'On the Waterfront' and 'North by Northwest', dies at 102

Summary

Eva Marie Saint, acclaimed for her roles in classic films and a career spanning stage, television and cinema, died on Tuesday at the age of 102.

Eva Marie Saint, who earned an Academy Award for her performance in Elia Kazan's 1954 film On the Waterfront and later appeared opposite Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 thriller North by Northwest, died on Tuesday at 102 years old.

Born and raised in Albany and Delmar, New York, Saint trained at the Actors Studio, performed on Broadway and worked in live television during the late 1940s before making her film debut near age 30. Kazan arranged a screen test with Marlon Brando, during which Saint recalled an improvised scene that impressed the director and led to her casting in On the Waterfront.

In the film, Saint portrayed Edie Doyle, a Catholic schoolgirl seeking justice after her brother, a longshoreman, is killed. Her performance earned her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Five years later, she played a contrasting role as a sophisticated woman opposite Cary Grant in North by Northwest.

Saint married director Jeffrey Hayden in 1951 and subsequently limited her film work to focus on family. She returned to television in the 1970s and won an Emmy in 1990 for the miniseries People Like Us.
